When it comes to hitches and towing products, we understand that there is a vast array of products and brands on the market. We do not make our product decisions based on market share or margins, as some retailers do. Our decisions in this category are based on our experiences with the products, in-house product comparisons (including quality of product, overall value, and functionality), and our knowledge about the manufacturers.

When it comes to tow bars, Demco is my top pick and go-to supplier. Their designs and features make them the logical pick over their competitors. We are also a dealer for both RoadMaster and Blue Ox tow bars and towing accessories, which both also make quality products. Take a look below at the comparison charts for these three brands, in their respective categories.
Did you know that each state has its own laws regarding towing requirements by weight? Whether you WANT a towed vehicle braking system or not, you may be required to have one depending on where you plan to travel. In some states the minimum towed weight without a supplemental braking system is as low as 1000 lbs - in others, there are no requirements? Iowa, as well as most of its neighboring states, requires a supplemental braking device whenever the towed vechicle exceeds 3000 lbs.** (**As of time of publishing. Laws are subject to change. Make sure you look up each state's laws for current information.)

There are a couple of different options for towed vehicle braking systems. There is the fully installed system that is hidden out of sight in your towed vehicle, allowing you to hook up and go without having to worry about the towing system. This is the type I prefer and the type I suggest to my customers.

My two top picks in this category are the SMI Air Force One from Demco and the SMI Stay-N-Play Duo from Demco. There is also a portable braking system available. This type is functional, but somewhat cumbersome and heavy. They sit in front of the driver's seat in the towed vehicle and have an actuator that attaches to the brake pedal. This may be inconvenient for some, as you have to uninstall and reinstall every time you hook up or unhook your towed vehicle. The two types of braking systems are very comparable price wise. The difference comes really in the install and labor. Our customers generally choose the installed hidden system, giving them the freedom to forget about their braking system and not have the headache of installing and uninstalling the portable system every time they hook up or unhook their towed vehicle.
