When it comes to hitches and towing products, we understand that there is a vast array of products and brands on the market. We do not make our product decisions based on market share or margins, as some retailers do. Our decisions in this category are based on our experiences with the products, in-house product comparisons (including quality of product, overall value, and functionality), and our knowledge about the manufacturers.

There are essentially two types of brake controls on the market. I call them consistent gain and self-adjusting gain brake controls. A consistent gain brake control applies the same amount of pressure to your trailer brakes all the way through your stop. This causes jerkiness, or excessive drag or push from your trailer to your vehicle. Self-adjusting gain brake controls cause your trailer brakes to act like your vehicle brakes, adjusting the pressure to your trailer brakes throughout the stop. There are 2 main benefits to a self-adjusting gain brake control. First off, it reduces trailer brake wear substantially. While a consistent gain brake control will cause a lot of chatter and overheating in your trailer brakes, a self-adjusting gain brake control will cause the brakes to operate smoothly. Secondly, Self-Adjusting Gain Brake Controls give you a much smoother, more consistent stop, increasing both comfort and safety.
While I will sell you either style of brake control, my top recommendation is always going to be the Prodigy P3 by Tekonsha. This self-adjusting brake control is in my opinion the best value on the market. It doesn't have as many bells and whistles as other brake controls, but it offers great functionality for the price. I have used it in the past, and would again.
